Salt and Light

(Matthew 5:13-16)

Hello December! Christmas is around the corner. With joy in my heart, I welcome you to the last month of 2021. It’s been an amazing year, and through it all, God has been kind and faithful in helping us soar on eagle’s wings. Our theme for December is “Salt & Light.”

Jesus gives us a very real calling for our lives when He said “...ye are the salt and light of the world” (Mat. 5:13-16). It is as though God is saying “Plan A is for you, my followers, to go into the world, to be salt and light to the world”. People are generally attracted to lights. Eccl 11:7 says “light is sweet...” God is saying you should attract people with your faithfulness, your goodness, your compassion, and your radical commitment to Him. Of course, there is no Plan B.

We have been entrusted by God to be His ambassadors, to take the message of reconciliation and peace into our homes, our communities, our workplace, and to our friends. There is nothing more exciting than knowing that we are being used by God to bring His message of grace, hope, forgiveness and eternal life to the world. Jesus used salt and light as metaphors to describe what we are destined to be. One thing that is common to both salt and light is that they have a radical influence and lasting impact on whatever they come into contact with. Notice that when Jesus said we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, He was not stating that as a suggestion, it is a requirement. This is a major part of our calling. It is our purpose as His disciples.

In John 8:12, Jesus declared “I am the Light of the world...”. In this season as we celebrate Him, what a great time to be reminded of who we are in Him. He is not asking us to be what He is not, but to be like Him. Show your flavour and shine your light! In this series we will discuss these topics - salt & light strategy, let there be light, and arise and shine. Come along!
